The coffee-growing region of Othaya, in Kenya, is famous for producing some of the most complex and vibrant coffees in the world. It is located in Nyeri County, in Kenya’s central highlands, an area recognized for its exceptional terroir for growing specialty coffee.

Its volcanic soil is rich in nutrients, which helps develop a bright and juicy acidity, a silky body, and a complex sweetness.

The coffee varieties grown in this region are the typical Kenyan ones: Ruiru 11, the most disease-resistant, and SL28 and SL34, the most common, known for their outstanding quality.

Othaya has several smallholder cooperatives, such as the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, which manages multiple washing stations (including Ichamama, Gatugi, and Karuthi).

Othaya’s coffees are ideal for those who enjoy bright, fruity, and structured profiles, with lively acidity and refined sweetness. It is one of the most sought-after regions in auctions and by specialty coffee roasters.
