Ruanda – Ikawa
Rwanda is known as the country of a thousand hills, it has an ideal climate and topography to grow very good quality coffee. After the 1990 genocide, the population found hope for the future in the coffee plantations. Thanks to foreign development organizations, aid came to Rwanda to support coffee production as a driver of the economy.
The government soon realized that they could not compete in terms of quantity of production, but they could compete in quality. They have invested a lot of time, energy, and resources in developing a network of common wet mills, where microlots from farms in different areas are processed. This political decision has paid off, as Rwanda has gained a very good reputation on the international specialty coffee scene. The Nyamasheke region ranks first as the coffee region of the country.
Ikawa, in one of the languages spoken in Rwanda, Kinyarwanda, means coffee.
This coffee has been grown by a group of small specialty coffee producers, who take advantage of the collaborative economy to deliver their products directly to the roasters. They focus on cup quality, environmental and economic sustainability, and transparency in the supply chain. This is possible thanks to the fact that they work as a team without intermediaries with the roasters, from the farm.
Its established goal is the production of sustainable coffee and high quality microlots together with fair prices for coffee growers that improve their quality of life and that of their families.
The Nyamasheke coffee region has 7 coffee districts where almost 400,000 inhabitants live and where more than 5,000 hectares of Arabica coffee are grown with the following varietals: Red Bourbon, Catuaí, and Caturra.
This coffee is ideal for filter preparations, cold brew, and espresso.
